Anion-exchange column
Dionex has introduced a hydroxide-selective, anion-exchange column for the analysis of phosphoric and citric acids in cola soft drinks. The IonPac Fast Anion IIIA column is solvent compatible and is available in a 3 mm format. Reportedly, the column can analyse phosphoric and citric acids in less than seven minutes using an isocratic potassium hydroxide eluent delivered by an eluent generator in combination with suppressed conductivity detection.
Crimping systems
Chromacol offers electronic crimping systems to overcome potential sample integrity problems. The Electronic Crimpers have adjustable slim steel jaws that fit around closely spaced vials enabling users to crimp vials in crowded autosampler trays. An electronic de-capper removes caps effortlessly and instantly. Additionally, the crimpers and de-cappers are available in 11 mm and 20 mm sizes with rechargeable batteries.
GC injector system
CTC Analytics has expanded its range of GC injector systems. The CombiPAL is now available with the ITEX Option, which consists of an add-on module that can be used with existing or new systems. The system performs enrichment of volatile or semi-volatile compounds during headspace analysis. The system set up allows fast, simple and efficient extraction of volatile or semi-volatile sample compounds. Furthermore, no cryofocussing is required to obtain sharp peaks.
Light-scattering detector
Wyatt has produced a three-angle light-scattering detector for determining the absolute molecular weights and sizes of polymers and biopolymers. The miniDAWN TREOS can be coupled to any liquid chromatograph (HPLC/GPC/SEC/FPLC) or used off-line in a "micro-batch" mode. The system can be used in biotechnology applications because it reveals aggregation phenomenon and tells the user how the molecules are behaving in solution. It has four auxiliary inputs for RI, UV or other instruments and a 60 mW GAaS laser with spatial filtering for high signal-to-noise. Furthermore, the system has a 64,000 colour LCD display that shows current system states, chromatographic conditions and more.
Membrane nitrogen generator
Parker Balston has released a self contained membrane nitrogen generator. The NitroFlow Lab produces nitrogen by using a combination of compressors, filtration and membrane separation technologies. It is claimed to produce 99% pure nitrogen with pressures of up to 8 bar. Typical applications for this technology include LC–MS–MS nebulizer gases for APCI and ESI, ELSD, Turbo Vaps and chemical solvent evaporation.
Polylactide standards
Available from PSS is an extended poly-(L)-lactide reference kit with a high molar mass standard. This enables the customer to analyse many industrially or scientifically interesting polylactides with one single calibration curve based on poly-(L)-lactides from 150 D up to 1 million D. Therefore, to obtain the true poly-(L)-lactide molar mass information for unknown samples there is no more need for universal calibration or additional light-scattering measurements. Furthermore, polylactides can be measured in TFE+KTFAc with PSS PFG columns.
Regression and calibration module
LabLogic has announced an enhancement to its software package. Laura offers separation scientists complete chromatography data handling capability for UV/vis and diode array detectors. Additionally, the software has the ability to control many commonly used HPLC systems including the Agilent 1200 modules. Furthermore, the calibration option allows multiple choices of curve fits and fully flexible reporting, with either internal or external calibration.
Reporting software packages
Thermo Electron has developed two versions of its reporting software packages to work with its suite of GC–MS instruments. The EnviroLab Forms 2.0 and the ToxLab Forms 2.0 have been developed to enable scientists to move step-by-step through environmental, food safety, toxicology or forensic analyses. Every aspect of sample data flow is accessed within the program and data integrity is built in to ensure accurate results. Furthermore, both systems offer comprehensive batch summary reports allowing batch-at-a-glance data reviewing.
Sample prep software
Available from Gerstel is MAESTRO software, which can operate as stand-alone software or be fully integrated with Agilent ChemStation. The ChemStation sequence list and method enable users to control every step and integrated control reduces the risk of operator error. In combination with the company's MultiPurpose Sampler the software can perform automated SPE, liquid standard addition, derivatization or extraction while chromatography of the preceding sample is in progress. Moreover, the software supports GC techniques such as automated liner exchange, thermal desorption, twister SBSE analysis, headspace and SPME.
Vertical mass spectrometer
Bruker Daltonics has announced the release of its autoflex III smartbeam vertical MALDI-TOF or TOF/TOF mass spectrometer. The instrument is suitable for expression proteomics, quantitative proteomics as well as peptide/protein biomarker discovery, identification and validation. The smartbeam laser allows variable repetition rates from 1 Hz up to 200 Hz. Additionally, it is claimed to offer a four-fold sensitivity increase compared with the previous autoflex II.
